Session leaders:

Dr. Ashley M. Toney, is Postdoctoral Research Fellow, UTHealth School of Public Health, El Paso. Translational/Clinical Nutrition Researcher focused on Latine Health Disparities. She is passionate about the intersection of nutrition, food access, microbiome, and equity, and she has been working on an initiative to bring the MSE concept into clinical research, practice, and training.

Dr. Kieran C. O’Doherty, is a Professor of Psychology, University of Guelph, and Director of the Discourse, Science, Publics research Group. He’s been an active member of MSE and has contributed to our speaker series, our symposia, and also our publications, and we have valued his perspective on MSE activities.

Emily Wissel, is a Ph.D. candidate, Emory University, is the MSE Director of Resource Dissemination, and is on the MSE social media team. Emily is not able to make it today, but she has been part of the organization and leadership behind almost every MSE initiative since she joined the group and her inexhaustible effort has really helped make this group what it is.

Speaker and panelists:

Dr. Mark Risjord, PhD. Professor of Philosophy, Emory University

• Title: "Crossing boundaries, building bridges: some reflections on interdisciplinary writing."

• Speaker Bio: Dr. Mark Risjord is a professor of philosophy at the Institute for the Liberal Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University. Dr. Risjord's work has contributed to the philosophy of social science and the philosophy of medicine and nursing. Particularly, his primary focus has been on issues in nursing research. He has written two books, and has published in numerous philosophy, anthropology, and nursing journals.
  

Dr. James Stegen, PhD., Physical & Computational Sciences Directorate, Pacific Northwest National LaboratorySpeaker Bio: Dr. James Stegen is an Earth Scientist and physical & computational sciences directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Stegen is an internationally recognized expert in ecological theory, the interface between microbial ecology and hydr-biogeochemistry, and distributed open watershed science. Dr. Stegen is the lead investigator for research linking microbial communities to subsurface biogeochemistry and multi-scale linkages among soil microbiomes, carbon-cycling, and permafrost. 

Dr. Michela Gambino, PhD. Assistant Professor at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and mSystems editor 

Speaker Bio: MG is Assistant Professor at the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark. She has been educated as an artwork restorer and as a microbiologist, with a PhD in Biological and Molecular Sciences from University of Milano, Italy. She has a multidisciplinary track record, spanning from cultural heritage conservation to soil ecology and wastewater treatment plants, to veterinary clinical microbiology and food safety.

Dr. Susan L Prescott, MD, PhD, FRACP. President,inVIVO Planetary Health @ the Nova Institute for Health, Baltimore, USA; Director, ORIGINS PROJECT Telethon Kids Institute; Professor of Paediatrics, UWA Medical School; Paediatric Immunologist, Perth Children’s Hospital; Editor in Chief, Challenges journal.

• Speaker Bio: Dr. Susan Prescott is a pediatrician, professor, and internationally acclaimed physician scientist with research into the early environmental determinants of health and disease. Specifically, Dr. Prescott focuses on immune health and how this can be enhanced through microbial biodiversity, healthy nutrition, stronger relationships with natural environments, and positive emotional assets. Moreover, she is an artist an award-winning author and president of inVivo Planetary health and editor-in-chief of Challenges.
