Weekly check-in with Jessica from the UMaine 4-H Learning Centers at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove. With the 4-H and Earth Pledges, nature appreciations (what we've been noticing in nature this week), and a reflection. Today we're melding our nature appreciations with our passions. For many, exploring the outdoors and observing birds, fish, trees, weather, rocks--are passions they hold. Making observations brings them joy and fulfillment. The late Peter Benson, a researcher at the Search Institute called the passions which bring us joy and fulfillment in life our Sparks! Your spark could be in the arts, doing service for others, being a kind person, cooking/science/math; if it brings you a sense of purpose, it is a spark. How we recognize and honor spark is a key element to the "4-H Thriving Model" developed in part by Mary Arnold at Oregon State Cooperative Extension. So, what are your sparks? If you are in Maine and birding is a passion of yours, please consider becoming part of the citizen science project with the Maine Bird Atlas. This 5-year project tracks birds that winter in Maine. If you're not in Maine, perhaps you can find something similar in your home state! Remember that these observations are in part what helps scientists track changes to the earth, including weather patterns. We are keeping those in the mid-south in our thoughts after their communities were ravaged by severe weather this past week. We hope that you are staying healthy and taking care of yourself. Until next time, take care ❤️🍀
