Weekly check-in with Jessica from the UMaine 4-H Learning Centers at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove. With the 4-H and Earth Pledges, nature appreciations (what we've been noticing in nature this week), and a reflection. Today is the Winter Solstice, or the shortest day and longest night, welcoming us into the 4th quadrant of the earth year: Winter! The Winter Solstice has served as a time for reflection on the year past and for looking into the year ahead in a reflective and hopeful way.
Today in Lincolnville, Maine it is 20*F, getting up to 30*F, and very wintery outside. In our nature observations, we noticed the different things we are able to see that are usually camouflaged by the leaf litter; especially those things, such as the seed pods from the sensitive fern, which remind us of sunnier and warmer seasons past.
Our reflection today from A.A. Milne's book "A House at Pooh Corner."
"The more it snows (Tiddely pom)
The more it goes (Tiddely pom)
The more it goes (Tiddely pom)
On snowing
And nobody knows (Tiddely pom)
How cold my toes (Tiddely pom)
How cold my toes (Tiddely pom)
Are growing"
Sometimes, in the darkest days of winter when it is cold out and we may be feeling low, a hummy song is a nice thing to bring a smile to our faces. (And, we know how much Jessica loves humming... if only we could type the humming for "the swimming hole"). As we dive into the winter season and winter break, we look forward to enjoying time outside playing and exploring, and spending quiet time with family. Please continue to take care of yourselves and your families and stay safe. We wish you the best this holiday season! ❤️🍀
